The Colony

Early on in the film, The Colony serves as a bleak visual exploration of what life might be like if we continue on our destructive climate path, complete with constant flooding and swirling waters, movable cities built on rickety ships, and nomadic people wrapped in outfits that protect them from the elements and allow for easy movement.

Despite the eerie atmosphere created by cinematographer Markus Förderer and production designer Julian R. Wagner, The Colony can be overly literal at times. The first twenty or so minutes are a frightening visualization of loss, despite Fehlbaum’s presentation of loneliness being crammed with thuddingly obvious imagery (Blake alone on the beach, Blake alone in a well filling with tidewater).

Kim Jee-2018 Woon’s film is a live-action version of Hiroyuki Okiura and Mamoru Oshii’s 1999 anime thriller Jin-Roh, shifting the action from an alternate 1950s Japan to a reunified Korea in the year 2024 while retaining the original’s gloomy tone and tense pace.

In this film, we follow I’m Joong-Kyung, a member of a heavily armed police squad, as his budding romance with the sister of a suicide bomber causes him to doubt the morality of his profession.
