In an exhibition game against Saint Leo on Wednesday night, the Gators destroyed them 110-46, with seven of their players scoring in double figures and every player who touched the court scoring. Ra Shaya Kyle led Florida’s offense, scoring 16 points in her debut while also grabbing 11 rebounds.
Additionally scoring in double digits were Alberte Rimdal (15), Nina Rickards (14), Leilani Correa (13), Jordyn Merritt (10), KK Deans (10), and Frieda Bühner (10). The Orange & Blue collectively made an outstanding 40 of 82 shots (48.8%), including 8 of 23 (34.8%) from the three-point range.
The Gators’ defense limited the Lions to 15 of 64 (23.4%) field goals and just 4 of 23 (17.4%) from beyond the arc. In yet another excellent performance, UF caused 22 errors in addition to 16 steals, with Deans leading the way with four. Florida dominated the boards, outrebounding the opposition 56-40, including 19 on the offensive end. Kyle finished first with 11, while three Gators (Bühner, Rickards, and Taliyah Wyche) scored seven. On Wednesday night, the Gators didn’t spend any time getting the offense going.
Faith Dut opened the game with a spectacular reverse layup off of a wonderfully placed lob from Kyle. That first possession set the tone for a 15-2 run that lasted for the first 3:30 of the game and included five points by Rimdal.
Following the opening minutes, the Gators’ offensive barrage didn’t stop, with freshman Bühner getting involved with four straight points before the media timeout, giving the Gators a 22-6 lead. The Gators went on to take the lead, leading 33-7 after one quarter.
With 7:17 left in the second quarter, Saint Leo managed to narrow the gap to 25, but that would be the closest the Lions would come before Florida pulled away for a 110-46 triumph from start to finish. The Florida lead increased to 66 points.
