Hank Green, a novelist and veteran host of amusing educational videos on YouTube, revealed on Friday that he has recently been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

“Good news and bad news. One, it’s cancer,” He stated in a video posted to his Vlogbrothers YouTube account. “Good news, it’s something called Hodgkin’s lymphoma,” he added. “It’s one of the most treatable cancers. It responds very well to treatment.”

With his older brother John Green, the best-selling author of young adult novels like “The Fault in Our Stars” and “Paper Towns,” Mr. Green launched Vlogbrothers for the first time in 2007.

Hank Green’s best-selling first book, “An Absolutely Remarkable Thing,” was inspired by his experience with internet stardom and the stress and discomfort it can bring.

“In a lot of ways it comes from a lot of my personal experience with how success feels,” He stated in an interview in 2018.  “There’s the very weird feeling of being bigger in people’s heads than you feel you are.”

Over the past ten years, the Green brothers have created an online video empire with over ten YouTube channels, including “SciShow” and “Crash Course,” with over 20 million subscribers and countless millions of views.

Hank Green, who is used to educating his audience on scientific concepts, claimed that his unusually swollen armpit was his first indication that something might be amiss. He then became aware of his swollen lymph nodes.

He saw a physician for scans, an ultrasound, and a biopsy. He knew he had autoimmune disease, infectious mononucleosis as a child, and other risk factors for cαncer.

Hank Green shared a tweet on its official Twitter handle:

He admitted that he was unsure how his medical condition would affect his ability to produce videos, but he was optimistic that his internet audience would comprehend.

Mr. Green, who has 7.5 million followers on TikTok, predicted that depending on how he feels when writing his newsletter, “Nerdfighteria,” he could need to spend more time on it.

“I know I’m going to feel like garbage,” he stated. “It’s going to be really unpleasant.”

Mr. Green stated that his first round of chemotherapy began on Friday and is expected to continue for at least four months.

In the video, he described a discussion he had with his brother John in which he said he told him that he believed “this is the best time so far in human history to get lymphoma.”

“And you gave me a very John Green thought: ‘Well, a year from now would’ve been better,’”  he laughed as he remembered.

The brothers were also partners in creating VidCon, an annual gathering of online culture held in Anaheim, California.

Hank Green won’t be attending the convention, which is slated to take place next month, according to a statement from VidCon on Instagram.

“To our Co-Founder, go-to science guy, and only person on the internet who seems to understand where all the candle wax goes: we’re sending all the love from the VidCon community & beyond,” it stated.

On Friday, Mr. Green’s supporters left supportive comments on his videos, posted messages on social media, and sent him images of pelicans at his very particular request.

Mr. Green stated stress is his primary symptom because he worries that receiving a cαncer diagnosis could cause his identity to be stolen.

“I want to be fun, goofy science guy,” he says, “not struggling with anxiety, cancer guy.”
