Holy Names University: A 154-year-old university in Northern California said Monday that it would permanently close its doors in 2019. The university is struggling with dwindling enrollment, growing operational costs, and financial difficulties brought on by the COVID-19 epidemic.
In a press release, Holy Names University in Oakland, founded in 1868, stated that it would shut down in May 2023 following the spring term.
The COVID-19 pandemic adversely affected the students HNU serves, many of whom come from underserved communities or are first-generation college students, according to a statement from HNU Board Chairperson Steven Borg.
“HNU had a strong 5-year strategic business plan and secured long-term financing, but the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated and exacerbated existing challenges and adversely affected the students HNU serves,” he added.
The private Roman Catholic institution currently has 423 graduate students and 520 undergraduates. However, according to the school, there are now only 449 students registered for the spring semester due to a dramatic decline in enrolment.
According to the announcement, layoffs should begin at the end of January or in the first few days of February. Students can continue their education at the Dominican University of California in San Rafael, located across San Francisco Bay.
