The affidavit states that one of the survivors heard crying and observed “a figure covered in black clothing and a mask” as the perpetrator left the scene of the crime. The affidavit claims that DNA evidence and cell phone signals tied Kohberger to the crime site.
The affidavit states that at 4:20 a.m., a white automobile, named “Suspect Vehicle 1,” was seen speeding away from the residence’s vicinity. The document states that Kohberger’s phone and car returned to the site between 9:12 and 9:21 in the morning.
According to the affidavit, Kohberger’s phone had previously “pinged” in the neighborhood of the 1122 King Road residence where the murders took place at least twelve times prior to November 13, 2022.
The affidavit states, “With the exception of one instance, all of these occurrences took place in the late evening and early morning hours of their respective days.”
Kohberger was a Ph.D. candidate in criminal justice and criminology at Washington State University at the time of the murders. Pullman, Washington is around eight miles from the house in Moscow, Idaho where the four students were killed, and the university is located there.

On the day of the suspect’s arrest, a white Hyundai Elantra was stolen from the Kohberger residence. This was the same car that police had been looking for in connection with the case.
Friendships were slain on the second and third floors of the off-campus residence on the morning of November 13 when Goncalves, Mogen, Kernodle, and Chapin were murdered. The two other housemates who were at home at the time of the attack were not hurt. At an early stage of the investigation, the surviving roommates were eliminated as potential culprits.
According to the affidavit, one of the two surviving roommates was on the second level when Kernodle and Chapin were killed, contradicting previous reports that the two had slept through the attack on the first floor.
