Jamin Ben Raskin, an American lawyer, professor of law, and politician, has been Maryland’s 8th congressional district’s representative since 2017. He held office in the Maryland State Senate as a Democrat from 2007 to 2016.
The district had previously reached the Pennsylvania border through rural Frederick County and parts of Montgomery County, a suburb of Washington, D.C. Raskin’s district now only includes a portion of Montgomery County as a result of redistricting in 2022.
Raskin co-chairs the Congressional Freethought Caucus. He acted as the lead impeachment manager (prosecutor) for President Donald Trump’s second impeachment in response to the attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Raskin co-founded the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project and the LL.M. program on law and governance at American University Washington College of Law, where he also taught constitutional law before winning election to Congress.

The Progressive Action PAC, the political wing of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, which increased from 72 members at the time of the endorsement to 92 members in early 2020, supported Raskin during the primary.
With 33% of the vote, Raskin won the seven-way Democratic primary—the actual race in this highly Democratic district. He was thought to be the most liberal contender. Raskin was significantly outspent in the primary, which was the most costly House campaign of 2016 in terms of spending.
Raskin received the support of the People’s Action community organizing project and the political organizing network Our Revolution, both of which are connected to Bernie Sanders. Dan Cox, the Republican nominee, was beaten by him with 60% of the vote.
Raskin was appointed the primary impeachment manager for the Senate impeachment trial that followed Trump’s second impeachment on January 12, 2021.
Along with Representatives David Cicilline and Ted Lieu, he was the main author of the impeachment article that accused Trump of instigating an uprising in the US Capitol. Raskin recalled that his daughter told him, “Dad, I don’t want to come back to the Capitol” after he had been there on January 6 while the crowd was forcibly entering.
