English is the world’s common language, online and offline. But local languages would be expected to dominate more than the common language in web content.
The Russian Federation (.ru) contains the least English content. The TLDs with the most English content were Slovakia’s .sk and Denmark’s .dk. In the case of the internationalized domain names (IDNs), local language sites comprise 84% on average with the rates of 90%. The lowest rate of the local language in IDNs was at 69% under .cat.
The second most popular language for web content is English in each of the 10 TLDs. The exception is for Catalonia’s .cat. The number one language is Catalan ahead of Spanish and English. Romanian comes third using .se (Sweden) internationalized domain names, albeit with less than 1%.
