Michael Bolton’s Career
Bolton began recording at The Church Studio in Tulsa in 1975. He named this debut album after himself, using his birth name, Bolotin. At first, he focused on hard rock, opening shows for Ozzy Osbourne, the heavy metal singer, and his band Blackjack.
Black Sabbath, Osbourne’s former band, reportedly rejected Bolton’s 1983 audition for the lead vocalist position. Later on, Bolton denied this, saying:
“I don’t know how on earth it started, but that rumor about me auditioning for Black Sabbath was only a rumor.”
For his 2015 single “Never Let Me Down,” rapper Kanye West sampled Michael Bolton’s song “Maybe It’s the Power of Love” with Blackjack.
After anglicizing his family name, Bolton co-wrote Laura Branigan’s song “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You,” which became his first big hit as a songwriter. Laura Branigan was previously best recognized for performing the classic song “Gloria.”
Though the song just made it into the Top 10 on the US pop chart, Branigan catapulted it to the top of the Adult Contemporary chart for three weeks in 1983. Bolton co-wrote “I Found Someone” for Branigan in 1985 because they both wanted to work together again.
Two years later, Cher brought the song and her singing career back to life, although her version was only a moderate hit. Bolton co-wrote several more songs for both performers. Bolton recorded a rendition of “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You” in 1988, and it reached its highest position on the Hot 100 list.
