Monterey Park Shooting

Monterey Park Shooting

Following a shooting spree at a Lunar New Year party in Monterey Park, California, north of Los Angeles on Saturday night, ten people are dead, and ten more are in hospitals.

More than eight hours after the shooting, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s office has yet to provide any information about the gunman, the weapon he used, or the precise circumstances leading up to or during the shooting.

The gunman is still at large. The incident occurred around 10:20 pm in Monterey Park, a city of roughly 60,000 people located 9 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, on the 100 block of West Garvey Avenue.

The population of Monterey Park is approximately 66% Asian American, with about 50% of that population being of Chinese descent. Numerous noodle shops and other businesses serving the Chinese American community can be found in the vicinity of the incident. Here is what we currently know.

What Happened?

Few details concerning the shooting have been made public by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. They were contacted at 10:22 p.m. due to reports of gunfire. According to CNN, the incident is thought to have occurred at a dancing studio and ballroom.

However, the name of the company has not been disclosed by the sheriff’s office. When sheriff’s deputies arrived, they discovered “several victims and customers in the store’s parking lot.” When the police entered the establishment, they found numerous other shooting victims.

Ten persons were already dead when the Monterey Park Fire Department arrived. According to authorities, at least ten additional patients, some of whom were in severe condition, were taken to nearby hospitals.

Sheriff’s Capt. Andrew Meyer said early on Sunday that police were also looking into any connections between the gunshot and another incident two miles away in Alhambra.

What Details About the Shooter Do We Know?

As of Sunday morning, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Office has provided virtually little information regarding the shooter, the weapon he employed, or his whereabouts. According to a sheriff’s office spokesperson, a press conference to give more details was planned for Sunday at 8 a.m. local time.

Meyer claimed that authorities are unaware of any potential shooting-related motives. “We will look at every angle,” he said, according to the Los Angeles Times.
