Trending under #angertest, these vids have over 20 million views. People are giving their opinions by taking the test and sharing their results, whether they are good, bad, or angry.
What is the Multiple Anger Dimensions Test?
It’s a test to see how easy it is for you to get angry. It’s also not as mysterious as it sounds. In other words, science backs it up. Individual Differences Research Labs, or IDRlabs for short, made it. This is the same company that made TikTok and the Difficult Person Test. Their personality tests are based on scientific research that has been reviewed by peers. We think this is a bit more official than a hashtag.
Dr. Judith M. Siegel did the scientific research that is being used here:
In 1986, Dr. Siegel made the Multidimensional Anger Inventory (MAI) see if there was a link between heart health and anger problems. This means that Dr. Siegel’s original test was made so that researchers could use it… Researchers haven’t been involved with this IDRlabs test that is popular on TikTok, though. Even though Dr. Siegel didn’t make this 38-question quiz herself, it was mostly based on her work.

How Does the Multidimensional Anger Test Work?
To take the test, you’ll read 38 statements and put them on a scale from “Disagree” to “Agree” based on how much you agree or disagree with them. Some examples are “I’m surprised at how often I get angry” and “When I’m mad at someone, I take it out on whoever is around.”
After you finish the test, your results will be based on five criteria:
- Anger Arousal: The frequency, magnitude, and duration of your anger
- Anger Spectrum: The type of situation that’s likely to make you angry
- Hostile Outlook: How cynical you are and how likely you are to blame and mistrust others
- External Anger: How likely are you to take your anger out on your surroundings. People who score higher on this are supposedly known for having a bad temper
- Internal Anger: How likely are you to bottle your anger up
Then, your results are added up to give you a total score, which is compared to everyone else’s scores. People say that the tester gets angrier as your score goes up.
What is the Iceberg of Anger?
The Anger Iceberg shows that even though anger is shown on the outside, other feelings may be hiding under the surface. Other feelings, like sadness, fear, or guilt, can make a person feel weak, or they may not have the skills to handle them well.
Anger Does Not Equal Aggression
The American Psychological Association (APA) says that anger is “a feeling of hostility toward someone or something you think has done you wrong on purpose.” Even though everyone gets angry sometimes, anger often has a bad name. Calls to “control anger before it controls you” and the idea of “anger management” can make it hard to see that the emotion’s evolutionary purpose is to get us to talk to each other and find solutions to problems, as Sell explained.

But the jury is still out on whether anger and heart disease are linked. This is because emotions like anger are hard to measure reliably.

Being angry is not the same as being mean. It can also help us express our feelings, find solutions to problems, and even feel closer to the people we’re angry with when we work through it together. But it’s not always easy to deal with anger or talk about it. A psychotherapist can help you deal with your anger, think about it in new ways, and come up with ways to handle it in the future.
Making Anger Work for Good
Harlich said that people could start by asking questions before taking the anger test as a true picture of their character. “When I think of all the ways someone could be angry, I wonder, ‘How did they get that way?’ What makes them so mad? Why might that be the case if they get angry more often than other people?'”

Harlich also said that it can be very helpful to work through these kinds of questions in therapy. Maybe in the past, her client wasn’t allowed to be angry or was afraid of losing a relationship if they did. She said that being able to feel angry in therapy and having the therapist accept that anger can be a “corrective emotional experience.”
Sell added that getting through hard conversations that make you angry can also help you feel closer to the person you were angry with at first.
