Oregon’s Secretary Of State Announces The Next Young Governor: One Hawks View Elementary School pupil was named the 2023 Oregon Kid Governor on Friday. Shemia Fagan, the secretary of state for Oregon, paid a personal visit to Lea Andrus, the new kid governor, at the Sherwood school.
In a press release, Fagan remarked, “The Oregon Kid Governor program is a great civic education initiative that teaches young Oregonians how their government works.” “I endorse this initiative because it provides young children with a practical civics education.
The initiative, which is free, offers resource packages, lesson plans, and educational materials promoting Oregon democracy. In the annual election, which involved more than 3,200 children from 127 classes in Oregon, Andrus came out on top.
Every candidate selects a platform for their campaign, and Andrus’s was to stop bullying. The fifth-grader intends to use the Tootles weekly note program to foster relationships among classmates.
She wants schools to elect “kindness assistants” and “encourage daily acts of kindness.” Other kid governor campaigns focused on issues like racism, recycling, pollution, healthcare, and school health. Since 2017, Oregon has taken part in the kid governor program.

After the Connecticut Democracy Center launched it in 2015, it was adopted by a second state. Candidates for kid governor were required to submit a quick video in which they discussed their leadership abilities, a local issue that was important to them, and three actions they would take to address that issue.
Twenty-two pupils submitted videos to run for governor, but a panel of judges selected just seven finalists for fifth graders in Oregon to vote on. Andrus’ tenure as kid governor will begin in January 2023, upon her inauguration. The remaining six finalists will be the members of the cabinet.
