Paul Simon’s Wife: American musician, singer, composer, and actor Paul Frederic Simon (born October 13, 1941) has been active for over six decades. As a solo performer and one-half of the folk-rock duo Simon & Garfunkel with Art Garfunkel, he has garnered a widespread reputation as a lyricist.

Simon spent his formative years in the New York City neighborhood of Queens after being born in Newark. In 1956, when they were still in their early teens, he and his school friend Art Garfunkel began performing together. American singer-songwriter-actor Paul Frederic Simon was born on October 13, 1941. His career spans six decades.

After only little success with their original rendition of “The Sound of Silence,” the duo got back together when an electric cover became a hit in 1966. Songs like “Mrs. Robinson,” “America,” “Bridge over Troubled Water,” and “The Boxer” were all written by Simon, and he and Garfunkel released five albums together.

After Simon & Garfunkel’s breakup in 1970, Simon spent the next five years releasing three critically praised albums that all debuted in the Top 5 of the Billboard 200. Two of his most famous songs, “Mother and Child Reunion” and “Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard,” appeared on his self-titled album, released in 1972.

He first achieved solo success with the top-charting album Still Crazy After All These Years in 1975, on which Garfunkel sang a cameo part. Some of the songs included on the album were “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover,” which peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as “Still Crazy After All These Years,” “Gone at Last,” and “My Little Town,” all of which reached the Top 40.

In 1981, Simon and Garfunkel reunited for a New York’s Central Park concert that drew half a million people. A world tour with Garfunkel followed this. After a creative dry spell, in 1986, Paul Simon released Graceland, an album heavily influenced by the music of South African townships.

He still receives the most critical accolades for this masterpiece, which has sold 14 million copies worldwide. Singles like “You Can Call Me Al,” “The Boy in the Bubble,” and “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes” were released from the album and became massive hits. As of 1987, it was deemed the best album of the year by the Recording Academy.

All through the ’90s, Simon was on the road. In 1997, he published Songs from The Capeman, an album that featured music from his Broadway musical The Capeman. You’re the One, his record from 2000, was nominated for Album of the Year once more.

Soon after the album’s release, he embarked on a lengthy traveling schedule, which included a second reunion tour with Art Garfunkel. After that, in 2006, he dropped his final studio album of the 2000s, titled Surprise.

His 2016 album, Stranger to Stranger, debuted at #3 on the Billboard Albums Chart and #1 in the UK. In 30 years, it was his most commercially and critically successful work. The tracks on his most recent album, In the Blue Light (2018), were reworked from earlier albums when they were less prominent.

Including three Album of the Year awards (Bridge Over Troubled Water, Still Crazy After All These Years, and Graceland), Simon has won sixteen Grammys for his solo and collaborative efforts.

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice (in 1990 with Simon & Garfunkel and in 2001 for his solo work.  Time magazine included him in their “100 People Who Shaped the World” list in 2006.

Rolling Stone ranked Simon on their list of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time and #9 on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time in 2011. Presented by the Library of Congress, the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song was Simon’s first significant honor.

How Did Paul Simon Get His Start Career?

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel became fast friends at 11 after meeting at school and eventually became songwriting partners. The two penned, recorded, and released over 30 songs during their teenage years and beyond, beginning with “The Girl For Me,” which Simon wrote at 13 for his pal Garfunkel.

Simon left for England after a string of failures and modest successes, but he was enticed back when an electric cover of “The Sound of Silence” was picked up by radio stations across the country. Later, after four more albums, the pair’s final effort, Bridge Over Troubled Water, became the best-selling record of all time.

Paul’s Ex-Girlfriend, Carrie Fisher

Paul dated Shelley Duvall for a while, then started dating her friend Carrie Fisher, and the two eventually tied the knot in 1983. Paul dated the late Star Wars actress, who passed away in 2016, off and on during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

There was undeniable affection between them despite their frequent splits. We continue to cherish each other immensely. Carrie is one-of-a-kind; she has no equal. I can think of a few whose minds work as quickly or humorously as hers.

Paul said of her in 1983, as reported by InStyle, “She is completely distinctive.” After reconciling a few weeks after their 1983 break, the pair tied the knot in New York City in front of a star-studded guest list that included Billy Joel, Lorne Michaels, Christie Brinkley, and George Lucas.

In 1984, they split up again, only to get back together and remain an item until the decade’s end. Paul’s love for Carrie was the inspiration for a number of his compositions. They have songs about their relationship and split called “Hearts And Bones” and “She Moves On,” and the song “Graceland” is commonly believed to be about the time they divorced.

In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2016, Carrie said that she appreciated the songs despite their less-than-nice lyrics. I understand the songs he composed about us. I enjoy it even when he’s trying to offend me. That is the best strategy if you want to get humiliated. “There is a little bit of us in ‘Graceland,'” she remarked.

Paul erased his heartfelt tribute to Carrie after her death in 2016, but it was archived and may be read here. As one person said, “Yesterday was a dreadful day. A truly exceptional and charming young lady, Carrie stood out. According to Variety, he said, “It’s too soon.”

Which Songs By Paul Simon Are The Most Well-known?

A novelty song titled “The Lone Teen Ranger,” written and credited to Jerry Landis, peaked at #97 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the fall of 1962 before mysteriously disappearing. If its author hadn’t changed his stage name to his birth name Paul Simon and begun creating some of the best songs of the 20th Century, it would be one of the most forgettable tracks to ever come on the pop charts.

Simon’s early recordings were done with his childhood friend Art Garfunkel, but in 1972 he went solo and hasn’t looked back. In celebration of his impending 75th birthday and the release of his latest album, Stranger to Stranger, we polled our readers to determine which of his solo efforts is the finest. Here are the outcomes if you’re interested. There were no votes for “The Lone Teen Ranger,” which is unfortunate.
