Plane Crashes Maryland: After Christmas, a pilot crashed into an icy Maryland creek, and two kayakers helped him to safety. Maryland State Police say that on Monday morning, pilot Steve Couchman crashed his single-engine plane into Beards Creek near Edgewater.

The police claimed Couchman’s plane began having engine issues shortly after takeoff from Lee Airport, and eyewitnesses reported hearing sputtering from the aircraft as it went overhead. Three people, two civilians, and an on-duty police officer from the Anne Arundel County Police Department, responded to the scene after 71-year-old Couchman crashed into the cold, partially frozen waters.

According to the Maryland State Police, they “deployed three kayaks to skim across the iced creek to help the pilot.” They further mentioned that the pilot got out of the sinking jet and stood on the wing. If the kayaks had come closer, the pilot could have clung to one of them for support.

Couchman was saved from hypothermia thanks to the actions of the kayakers, according to Lt. Jennifer Macallair of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, who was shown in a video broadcast by NBC affiliate WBAL.
