Bob Penny Cause of Death: Bob Penny, a poet and professor who played minor roles in films including Forrest Gump, Sweet Home Alabama, and My Cousin Vinny after retiring, as well as in the TV series In the Heat of the Night, passed away on December 25 in Huntsville, Alabama.
He was 87. His passing was reported on Huntsville’s Laughlin Service Funeral Home & Crematory website. The reason for death was not disclosed. Penny was raised in North Carolina before moving back to Alabama as an adult and spending 21 years teaching poetry and prose at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, was born in Anniston, Alabama.
He participated in numerous theatrical plays throughout the Southeast and received an Applause Prize for theater from the Alabama School of Fine Arts in 1996. He also earned a regional award for his poetry.
In 1988’s Mississippi Burning, Penny played Curtis Foy; in Fried Green Tomatoes and My Cousin Vinny, she played a bailiff and a juror; in 1995’s Best Picture winner Forrest Gump, she played a “crony”; and, among other films, she appeared in The Legend of Bagger Vance and Sweet Home Alabama.

Penny retired from teaching after 32 years and began pursuing film and TV roles. He had many small-screen TV appearances, including seven episodes of the NBC (and then CBS) drama series In the Heat of the Night, which starred Carroll O’Connor and Howard E. Rollins Jr. Penny is survived by his sister Jean Marion Yount, brother William Earl Penny (Betty), six nieces, and one nephew.
