Nancy Pelosi’s Political Career
Pelosi got her political start in the 1960s as an intern for Democratic Senator from Maryland, Daniel Brewster. She ultimately settled in San Francisco, where she met and became close with Phillip Burton, a representative from California’s 5th congressional District.
She was first elected to represent California on the Democratic National Committee in 1976 and served in that capacity until 1996. During the 1970s and 1980s, she held several important positions within the Democratic Party, including chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee’s finance committee.
Sala took over for Burton after he went away in 1983. Sala Burton named Pelosi as her successor after deciding not to seek re-election, effectively guaranteeing that Pelosi would have the backing of Burton’s prior supporters.
Pelosi was elected as the representative for California’s 5th congressional District in a special election held in June 1987 after Sala’s tragic death just one month into her second term.
From 1987 to 1993, she served as a representative for the 5th District, and from 1993 until her current time in office (April 2020), she has represented the 8th District.
Additionally, Pelosi has served as the House Minority Whip from 2002 to 2003, the Leader of the House Democratic Caucus since 2003, the House Minority Leader from 2003 to 2007 and again from 2011 to 2019, and the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011; she was sworn in as Speaker again in January 2019.
The last person to be re-elected to the position of Speaker for multiple non-consecutive terms was Sam Rayburn in 1955. However, she agreed to a compromise that limited her speaking time to only four years to recover the office.
The announcement of impeachment hearings for the President on September 24, 2019, is one of the most notable events of Pelosi’s second tenure as Speaker, which occurred during President Donald Trump’s first term.
