Richie was born in Tuskegee, Alabama, on June 20, 1949, to Alberta R. Foster, a teacher and principal, and Lionel Brockman Richie Sr., a systems analyst for the US Army. His grandfather’s grandmother, Adelaide Mary Brown, was a pianist with classical training.
He discovered that his maternal great-grandfather was the head of a historic Black American fraternal organization in a Who Do You Think You Are? episode from March 4, 2011.
Richie’s early years were spent on Tuskegee University’s campus. His grandparents received their home as a gift from Booker T. Washington. He graduated from the East Campus of Joliet Township High School.

Brenda Harvey and Richie were married on October 18, 1975, their first anniversary. The couple informally adopted Nicole Camille Escovedo, age 2, in 1983.
She was the niece of Lionel’s drummer Sheila E. and the daughter of a member of the band. Nicole was formally adopted into the Richie family as their daughter when she was nine years old.
Police detained Harvey in June 1988 after finding Richie inside Diane Alexander’s Beverly Hills home.
