Randy Travis was born on May 4, 1959, in Marshville, North Carolina. His mom worked at a textile factory, and his dad owned businesses and farms. He had five siblings. His dad encouraged him to love music.

At 8, Travis sang in church and played guitar. At 10, he and his brother Ricky started a band called the Traywick Brothers. They performed at contests and clubs. Travis left school early and got into trouble with the law for things like burglary and stealing cars.

In 1975, he won a contest at a club in Charlotte called Country City USA. The club owner, Elizabeth Hatcher, hired him as a cook and let him sing there. After some more trouble, Elizabeth became Randy’s guardian and manager.

He started making music for Paula Records in 1978 and put out songs like “Dreamin'” and “She’s My Woman.” In 1982, Elizabeth moved to Nashville with Randy after leaving her husband. Their relationship turned romantic, and they got married almost ten years later.

Randy joined the Grand Ole Opry in late 1986. His album “Always & Forever” in 1987 went 5 times Platinum, followed by “Old 8×10” in 1988 and “No Holdin’ Back” in 1989, both going 2 times Platinum. Every single from “Always & Forever” hit #1 on the “Billboard” Hot Country Songs chart and the Canadian Country chart.

In the 1990s, Randy released the Platinum albums “Heroes & Friends” (1990) and “High Lonesome” (1991), and the Gold album “This Is Me” (1994).
