Who is the Mandalorian? What Does the Look Like Under His Helmet?

He is the fiercest bear-plated bounty hunter in the galaxy, a powerful guardian of the cutest alien baby in the world, a master pilot, and his name is… what, exactly? If your mind is blank, don’t worry—despite being the main character in the Disney + Star Wars series The Mandalorian, the titular character still has many unknowns.

Even though the critically acclaimed live-action series is in its second season, much of Mando’s past is unknown because the warrior only speaks when it is vital to know what is happening.

And there’s a good reason: as lead actor Pedro Pascal disclosed, the spaghetti western star of Man with No Name, Clint Eastwood, served as a significant inspiration for the film’s lone gunman.

The first season of The Mandalorian disclosed some critical details about the character, including his identity, even if Mando is purposefully created to be a cautious and morally dubious threat. It is what? What does he even look like, exactly? We’re glad you inquired. Listed below is everything we know about The Mandalorian.

Who is the Mandalorian?

We are aware that this appears to be a simple inquiry. The solution isn’t entirely obvious, though. Pedro Pascal, who portrays The Red Viper in Game of Thrones, constantly plays the role, as we hinted above.

But not always. While Pascal physically depicts Mando in several situations and voices all of the character’s lines, there are other times when a separate actor dons the armor.

For instance, Pascal was replaced by stunt doubles in the fourth episode of season one, Sanctuary, while he starred in a Broadway production of King Lear. But when the filming was over, the actor recorded all of Mando’s lines.

It’s interesting to note that John Wayne’s son, Brendan Wayne, was one of the stunt doubles that played Mando in that episode. Also, Wayne collaborates closely with Pascal to develop the character’s physical habits, as was disclosed in a Vulture interview. Wayne said:

“[Pascal] would ask me, and I would ask him the same question, which is, ‘Why did you move like this during that moment?’ We would go back and forth,”

“The great thing about him is he’s not impressed with himself. He’s just an actor. And I mean that in the good way, not the bad way. He likes to learn and he likes to collaborate and he’s very good at it.”

What is the Mandalorian’s Name?

Although The Mandalorian is always referred to as “Mando,” his real name is Din Djarin. Big nasty Empire Moff Gideon disclosed that in the season one finale (Giancarlo Esposito). It’s unclear how he acquired this knowledge.

Still, Djarin surmises that Gideon must have had access to Mandalorian records after participating in the Great Purge (the great war between the Mandalorians and the Empire). What does the name “Din Djarin” mean, then? There isn’t much.

And that’s the key: this moniker distinguishes Djarin as a fighter in his own right rather than implying that he is related to fellow Mandalorians Boba or Jango Fett.

What Does the Mandalorian Look Like Under His Helmet?

As you may have observed, Mando had his helmet fixed on his head the whole first season. His tribe had a law that no Mandalorian would ever take off their helmet in front of another. He can remove it when he eats or does his laundry, but he must do it himself.

These regulations explain why The Mandalorian’s visage infrequently appears in the first season, except for one particular instance. In the season finale, viewers saw Mando remove his helmet and allow the murderous nanny droid IG-11 to treat him for a severe injury. Yet even if IG-11 isn’t a natural person, Mando is still able to abide by the customs of his tribe.

What does Din Djarin look like, then? Basically: Pedro Pascal. Mando looks exactly like Pascal, contrary to popular belief, which said that he never removes his helmet because of severe facial damage or scars.

What Else Do We Know About the Mandalorian?

In addition to his name, Din Djarin is known for a few other things. Importantly, this also covers how he first turned into a Mandalorian. The season one finale’s flashback reveals that Djarin’s parents were slain during the Clone Wars by rebel CIS forces (thus explaining why Mando hates droids).

Djarin was spared from the assault by the Mandalorian tribe, The Death Watch. It’s interesting to note that, according to Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Darth Maul, a Sith Lord, will later lead this army. Yet when they save Djarin, Maul takes over as leader of the Watch.

Also, viewers are informed that upon his recusal, Djarin was brought to Mandalore, the home planet of the Mandalorians, and raised there.

Despite these few details, we still don’t know much about Djarin’s motivations for becoming a bounty hunter or what transpired when he collaborated with Ran Malk’s mercenaries (the heist group portrayed in season one, chapter six, The Prisoner). Mando is so enigmatic that you never know who is performing him at any time.
