Russ Francis Cause of Death
Russ Francis, a former NFL tight end, perished in a private plane crash on Sunday near Lake Placid. The cause of his death was not disclosed by the Patriots when they announced it on Monday. He was in his 70s.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it is “investigating the Oct. 1 crash of a Cessna 177RG near Lake Placid, New York.”
According to the Enterprise, Francis, who recently acquired the Lake Placid Airways scenic tour company, was on board the aircraft with Richard McSpadden, senior president of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, who also perished in the collision.
According to the AOPA, McSpadden was in the right seat of the Cessna 177 Cardinal when it had an emergency shortly after takeoff at 4:09 p.m. ET. “The airplane attempted to return to the airport but failed to make the runway,” the AOPA said in a statement, per Syracuse.com. “Both occupants lost their lives.”
Francis played for the Patriots from 1975 until he was moved to the 49ers in ’82 when New England chose him in the first round of the NFL Draft. He played for San Francisco’s Super Bowl XIX-winning squad. Francis was eventually released in 1987, returned to New England the following year, and then announced his retirement in 1989. He was given three Pro Bowl selections. His wife Judy, son Grant, and daughter Annabel all survive him.
