Austin Butler Thanked the Presley Family for Their Love in His BAFTA Speech

Austin Butler gave a moving acceptance speech when given the BAFTA for Leading Actor at this year’s gala and dedicated it to the Presley family. The Elvis star was in London at the same time that Hollywood A-listers gathered in the Royal Festival Hall at the Southbank Centre on Sunday night, February 19.

The awards presentation has been held at the Royal Albert Hall for the past six years, but this is a change from where it has typically been. Austin Butler, nominated for his legendary performance in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis last year, was among the many well-known figures present.

Butler utilized the BAFTAs’ platform to honor the late singer Lisa Marie Presley in light of her unexpected death last month.

Austin Butler was one of six actors up for the Leading Actor category at the BAFTAs on Sunday night. He competed against British actors Daryl McCormack, Paul Mescal, Bill Nighy, and Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin, Aftersun) (Good Luck To You, Leo Grande).

Brendan Frazer was another American representative, an American actor nominated for his work in The Whale. Butler, however, was ultimately the winner of the BAFTA award for his work in Elvis. He was honored with the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical one month prior.

Austin Butler’s Bafta Speech Pays Tribute to the Presley Family

When Austin Butler accepted the BAFTA for Leading Actor, he had many people to thank. Butler begins:

“This is truly extraordinary,”

“Thank you all so much, thank you BAFTA for this tremendous honor. To my fellow nominees, I am in awe of you. I am so grateful for all of these times we’ve been able to spend together. Brendan [Frazer], you’re right there, I love you. This is amazing. I’m trying to take everything in and be really present. I’ve got so many people I want to thank.”

Butler then expresses gratitude to everyone on his team, including his publicist, agent, movement coach, and assistant director for Elvis. But the speech was incomplete until Butler acknowledged the inspiration behind his performance, Elvis himself. Butler said on stage:

“Lastly, I want to thank the Presley family,”

“I cannot thank you guys enough for your love and for sharing with me who Elvis truly was. I hope I’ve made you proud. This means the world to me.”

Austin Contacted Lisa Marie Presley After Her Death

Austin Butler spoke about the late Lisa Marie Presley in the press room after his acceptance speech while not explicitly mentioning her. Butler said, as per the Daily Mail’s report:

“It’s been a really unimaginably tragic time, you know, and grief is a long process,”
