Galaxy Z Flip 4 Release Date Status: Is Samsung Coming Out With a Flip 4?

Galaxy Z Flip 4 Release Date: Advances in foldable smartphones have been phenomenal over the past few years, with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip series likely being at the forefront. Even though the Z Flip 3 was the best foldable on the market last year and sold millions of devices around the world, it does have a few major problems that can’t be overlooked.

All of that has changed with the release of the Flip 4. Although this is mostly a rehash of last year’s model, the battery life and camera performance—two areas where the prior phone fell short—have been much enhanced, along with a slew of other minor improvements to enhance the user experience.

That’s a £50/€50 increase on the base price of the Flip 3 in the UK and Europe, which, given current inflation levels, is really no surprise; lucky US consumers may get it for the same price as previously, though. In any case, the 512GB upgrade is something that everyone will be happy to see.

Again this year, Samsung is giving its Bespoke Editions of the phone, which let you change the color of the phone’s front and back panels as well as its frame. It costs an additional $80, £40, or €40, and is only compatible with the 256GB version of the phone.

What Are the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 Specs and Features?

Design and Build

The Z Flip 4 is more of an evolution than a major departure from the design of the Flip 3.

The phone is nearly identical to last year’s model at first glance, but there are a few key improvements. There’s a slight increase in the size of the cover screen, and the camera lenses stick out more from the device’s frame. The corners of the phone are now more squared off, giving it a sleeker appearance, and Samsung has reduced the bezel around the internal display by a hair.

The hinge has been completely rethought and is now considerably smaller and lighter, representing the most notable modification in the construction. By doing so, the wrinkle in the screen is less noticeable and less noticeable when the phone is open.

Combined with the improved ultra-thin glass used to cover the panel, this should increase durability. Gorilla Glass Victus+ is used for the exterior, and the IPX8 classification remains the same, therefore the phone is still water-resistant but not dust-resistant.

The phone’s color scheme has also undergone significant revisions. At launch, you can choose from four different basic color options: Bora Purple, Blue, Pink Gold, and Graphite.

The Bespoke Edition of the phone will include a variety of additional colors. With three frame colors (black, silver, and gold) and five for the primary panels, there are more choices than in previous years (green, navy, red, yellow, and white).

Displays

Samsung hasn’t made any major improvements to their displays either. The outside screen has increased very slightly from 1.83 to 1.9in, while the inner folding screen remains a 6.7in AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate.

Samsung, however, has updated the software behind the exterior cover screen so that it can show off your own personal photos, gifs, and videos. Toggles for things like Bluetooth and Airplane mode, as well as a speed dial option for up to three contacts, are among the new widgets.

As was previously observed, the revised hinge also appears to have reduced the visibility of the screen crease. The new crease is far less deep, making it harder to see and feel when using a swipe motion.

Chipset, RAM, and Storage

Improvements in both raw performance and economy have been made to the Z Flip 3’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset with the introduction of the new Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.

Memory remains at 8GB, but storage has been doubled. Despite the absence of a MicroSD card slot like the Z Flip 3, the previously available 128GB and 256GB storage options return alongside a new 512GB storage SKU.

Cameras

The cameras on the Z Flip 4 may look the same at first glance, but they’ve actually been improved upon behind the scenes, particularly the primary sensor.

Once again, you’ll find a 10MP front-facing camera and a dual 12MP rear-facing camera setup (main and ultrawide). The selfie and ultrawide cameras haven’t altered much, but the 8+ Gen 1’s improved image processing will make them even better.

The advantages of the primary camera are more substantial. Here, we see the benefits of a new, larger sensor, with pixels that are 1.8 m in size rather than 1.4 m as in previous years. As a result, images have greater depth and dynamic range, particularly in dim conditions, though I noticed benefits even in well-lit photographs.

The Battery and Its Recharge

It is not surprising that Samsung would seek to address one of the Z Flip 3’s most glaring flaws, the phone’s battery life. The battery has been upgraded from the 3300mAh found in the Flip 3 to a more robust 3700mAh.

Combined with the increased power efficiency of the 8+ Gen 1, that may seem like a small increase, but Samsung told me that it has seen an average increase of three hours in usage time compared to the Flip 3, and that one tester was able to keep the phone working for a full 36 hours.

Supporting that claim is a 55% increase in charging power, from 15W to 25W. To be expected, wireless charging is also back.
