Although the prognosis was initially positive, a subsequent blood clot caused a brain bleed, necessitating surgery to release the pressure on his brain. The 66-year-old is doing better today, despite his family’s claims that his particular scenario only had a 30% survival chance. According to his family, the news came two years after Sinbad suffered an ischemic stroke as a result of a blood clot that had moved from his heart to his brain.
He was given a “very promising” prognosis at first, but the following day, he had another blood clot. His brain began to expand shortly after he underwent a second surgery, and when surgeons performed a craniotomy to relieve the pressure, they found a brain bleed.
He was put on a ventilator and put into a medically induced coma at that point. Sinbad was eventually sent to a rehabilitation facility in May 2021 after spending months being transported between acute care hospitals. He was finally allowed to return home two months later, nine months after his initial stroke.
In fact, he recently made a guest appearance in an episode of FX’s “Atlanta.” He has been getting better. According to the family, the expense of his care has risen over what insurance would pay. Therefore, they are now turning to the website for assistance in paying for his treatment.
“Love you brother keep fighting,” he wrote on Instagram, adding to his Instagram story that “legends fall on hard times let’s all be a part of the healing.” D.L. Hughley, a fellow performer and comedian, encouraged donations as well, stating that Sinbad “is not only a naturally talented, FUNNY brotha, he’s a good one too.”
“This thing of ours, it’s a brotherhood and sisterhood that comes with an unspoken bond,” he wrote on Instagram, resharing the words of actor Chris Spencer. “…Many times we don’t get a chance to help because it’s too late. … Here is our opportunity to stand up for one of the greatest stand ups.”
Sinbad’s family collaborated with toy designer Miguel Wilson and Rad Retro Power to produce a limited edition handpainted Sinbad action figure as part of the attempts to raise money for his recuperation. Only 40 of the figures have been created thus far, according to a post published on Sinbad’s Instagram on Monday, and all sales will go toward supporting his recovery.

After months in the hospital and numerous surgeries, Sinbad was finally admitted to the California Rehabilitation Institute in May 2021 to start “intense therapy.” He persisted despite the challenging recuperation process, and nine months later, in July 2021, he was ready to go home.
His family just posted a picture on Instagram in November 2022 that showed the Michigan-born actor and comedian making major strides in his recovery. The image showed Sinbad relearning how to walk with a walker, which was an emotional and motivating accomplishment for him and his loved ones.
