Penny Marshall was an American actress, television and film producer/director. Before securing her iconic role as Laverne DeFazio on the 1970s sitcom “Laverne & Shirley” (as the opposite of Cindy Williams, who played Shirley Feeney), Penny had a string of small television roles.

Between 1976 and 1983, Penny made appearances in all 178 of the episodes of the show. The show’s creator and writer was Penny Marshall’s brother, Garry Marshall. Shotz Brewery is a fictional Milwaukee brewery where Penny and Cindy played single roommates who worked as bottle-cappers. Marshall passed away in Los Angeles in December 2018 from heart failure. Numerous celebrities, such as former spouse Rob Reiner and former colleagues Ron Howard and Cindy Williams, offered their condolences to Marshall. Her final resting place was Hollywood Hills’ Forest Lawn Memorial Park. An engraved “L” on her headstone represents her Laverne persona.

Penny Marshall Death

Stars paid tribute to Penny Marshall after the actress, comedian and director passed away. The “Laverne & Shirley” actress passed away at her Hollywood Hills home on Monday night due to complications from diabetes, according to Marshall’s publicist. She was seventy-five.

Marshall’s ex-husband, director and actor Rob Reiner, said he was “so sad” to hear the news. Reiner and Marshall were married from 1971 to 1981, and he adopted Marshall’s daughter, Tracey, from her first marriage. Reiner wrote, “I was very lucky to have lived with her and her funnybone. I will miss her.”

Penny Marshall Acting Career

Marshall relocated to Los Angeles to pursue a career in Hollywood after getting divorced. Her first role was as a plain girl with ugly hair opposite Farrah Fawcett, who was playing a pretty girl with beautiful hair, in a Head and Shoulders shampoo commercial.

Marshall took a part in the 1968 film “How Sweet It Is,” which her brother Garry, a Los Angeles resident, produced. Her brother was an executive producer of the television series “The Odd Couple,” and she went on to land roles in that series and “The Savage Seven” before accepting an offer for a recurring role.

Marshall kept acting while he was on “The Odd Couple,” appearing in movies and TV shows like “Evil Roy Slade,” “The Crooked Hearts,” and “Paul Sand in Friends and Lovers.” Despite the mid-season cancellation of “Paul Sand,” CBS studio executives hired Marshall to join the cast of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” because of the positive reviews he received for his performance.

Cindy Williams and Marshall were both cast in a 1975 episode of “Happy Days.” Laverne DeFazio and Shirley Feeney were the roles that the two performed. On the show, the two played witty brewery employees who went on dates with Fonzie and Richie. Due to the two’s enormous popularity with the studio audience, Gerry Marshall decided to develop “Laverne & Shirley” as a spinoff. After making guest appearances in five more “Happy Days” episodes, the two actresses went on to star in eight highly successful seasons of their show.
