Why the Darksaber Becomes So Much Heavier During Battle?
Why does Din Djarin’s Darksaber in The Book of Boba Fett become heavier during battle (and it is unquestionably Din Djarin’s Darksaber now)? The Darksaber, first seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, is said to have been Tarre Vizsla’s legendary sword as a Mandalorian Jedi from long ago. But, now, possessing the blade is a sign of the true king of Mandalore.
The Darksaber made its live-action debut in Disney+’s The Mandalorian, and by the end of season 2, Din Djarin had won the sword’s previous owner, Moff Gideon, in single combat. The Book of Boba Fett episode 5 pauses its regular schedule to provide Star Wars fans with a surprise episode of The Mandalorian.
In this episode, Djarin makes an unexpected comeback. Following Din Djarin’s encounter with Luke Skywalker in the season 2 finale of The Mandalorian, the bounty hunter locates The Armorer to order a special gift for a particular tiny pea-green Jedi.
Din Djarin comments that the blade feels “heavier” with every movement as the two Mandalorians talk about the dangers and history of the Darksaber he now owns. The Armorer claims that her client is “fighting” the Darksaber rather than using it in battle. Still, there is more information about the Darksaber’s fictitious weight elsewhere in the Star Wars canon.
The aptly named “Trials of the Darksaber” episode of Star Wars Rebels season 3 features Sabine Wren learning how to use the formidable titular weapon for the first time while being instructed by Kanan Jarrus. When the Darksaber ignites, Sabine comments that it seems “heavier than [she] imagined,” and Jarrus promptly explains why.
The fugitive Jedi claims the Darksaber is much more difficult than a standard lightsaber. Jarrus says:
“Energy constantly flows through the crystal. You’re not fighting with a simple blade, as much as you are directing a current of power. Your thoughts, your actions, they become energy. They flow through the crystal as well, and become a part of the blade.”
In other words, someone who lacks control and acceptance over their thoughts and feelings – or those with an undisciplined combat technique – will find the Darksaber heavier to carry since all of that inner baggage channels into the blade, weighing it down.
In The Book of Boba Fett, Din Djarin is a character going through a lot of anguish. He recently realized that his entire Mandalorian ideology is the philosophy of an extreme cult, gave up Grogu to Luke Skywalker, unintentionally became the leader of his people, and, to top it all off, his ship was destroyed by the Empire.
Not to mention that, compared to the more civilized world of lightsaber forms (which Kanan Jarrus made Sabine learn before she started her Darksaber training), Din Djarin is more accustomed to blasters and explosives. It is hardly surprising that Mando struggles with his swordsmanship, and the weight of the blade is to be expected.
The crystal of the Darksaber is receiving more of Djarin’s energy as he continues to utilize it. Thankfully, Din Djarin can quickly acquire Darksaber proficiency. While Sabine Wren trains with Kanan Jarrus in Star Wars Rebels, she confronts her anxiety and rage over what happened to Mandalore and declares her desire to tame the black blade to defend her loved ones.

The blade feels lighter as the sparring practice continues, as Sabine eventually admits, which Jarrus explains as creating a “connection” between the weapon and the owner. Din Djarin must form a similar relationship with his new toy to fully utilize it in The Book of Boba Fett and The Mandalorian season 3.
Otherwise, the emotional energies will drag his Darksaber down as they pass through its crystal. Now that Grogu is not in his custody, perhaps Din Djarin also needs a clearer understanding of what he is fighting for.
