Is it true that The Super Mario Bros. Movie has broken the record for the most money made by a movie based on a video game of all time? It has earned more than $1.3 billion all across the world, surpassing the previous record of $1.2 billion held by Warcraft.

At first, people thought it might make around $125 million in its first five days in about 4,025 theaters. It was also predicted to make about $100 million in other countries. But it did even better than expected. On the first day, it made $31.7 million, and on the second day, it made $26.5 million.

So, the estimates went up to $141 million for the five days. Then, after making $55 million on Friday, the estimates were raised again to $191 million. When the movie was shown for the first three days, it earned $146.4 million, and over five days, it got $204.6 million. The movie also made more money overall than any other video game-based movie before, passing $190.8 million. The movie did really well during Easter weekend too, coming in third place for the highest earnings during Easter, after Furious 7 and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It was even better than the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which used to have the best Wednesday opening.

Also, it beat Minions for the best opening weekend for Illumination, and it earned more than Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which had the biggest opening of 2023. Overall, the movie had the third-best opening weekend in the US for any animated film, after The Lion King and Incredibles 2. It did really well in other countries too, making $173 million, and combined with the US earnings, it reached a total of $375 million, breaking the record set by Frozen II.

It also earned more in its opening weekend worldwide than Warcraft, which had the previous record for video game-based movies. In the second weekend, the movie made $92.5 million, the most ever for an animated film in its second weekend. In the third weekend, it made $59.9 million, again the most for an animated film.

Even in its fourth weekend, it did great, earning $40 million, and it passed the $1 billion mark in late April. This made it the fifth film in the pandemic era to make that much, following Spider-Man: No Way Home, Top Gun: Maverick, Jurassic World Dominion, and Avatar: The Way of Water.

It was also the first animated film to hit $1 billion since Frozen II in 2019. In its fifth weekend, the movie’s earnings dropped by 54%, making $18.6 million. It came in second place after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. And by this time, the movie had earned more than $500 million in the US and Canada.

In the second weekend, the movie earned $102.5 million from 71 places, which was only 22% less than the previous weekend.

In the third weekend, it made $70.7 million from 78 places, which was a 38% drop. In the fourth weekend, the movie made another $68.3 million in 80 different countries. This includes a $14.3 million opening weekend in Japan, where it had the best opening ever for an animated movie from a studio.

By June 14, 2023, the places where the movie had earned the most were Mexico ($89 million), Japan ($84.7 million), United Kingdom ($66.2 million), France ($58 million), Germany ($54.1 million), and Australia ($34.2 million). In Mexico, it’s now the movie that has made the most money ever.
