Police reported that a lady was shot and killed inside an automobile early on Thursday afternoon on New Jersey Avenue NW, not far from Dunbar High School. According to D.C. police, two women were in a car in the 1300 block of New Jersey Avenue NW when the driver was shot by the passenger, who then plowed the vehicle into a telephone pole.
Just before 12:20 p.m., the event took place next to a fire station. First responders arrived quickly to try to save Sophia Johnson, 38, but she was declared dead at the site. The only other person in the car at the time, 39-year-old Ariel Cooper, was questioned by police when they found a revolver and shot casings inside. Third District Commander James Boteler stated, “Preliminarily, we do know that there was a firearm inside the car present, as well as expended bullet casings, indicating that the gun was shot, or a pistol was discharged, from within the vehicle.

Cooper faces a second-degree murder allegation while carrying a weapon. The only thing that was immediately evident about the two women’s relationship was that they were acquainted. No one else was harmed, according to the police, despite a stray bullet hitting another car nearby.
As of right now, according to Boteler, “we feel that this was self-contained to what transpired inside one vehicle while going through our District. Following the shooting, Dunbar High School briefly went into lockdown, but it was soon lifted.
