Outlander Renewed for Eighth and Final Season: A Prequel Series is Approved by Starz!
A new age is emerging and an old one is ending. Following the anticipated extended 16-episode Season 7 premiere of the famous historical drama this summer, Starz has confirmed that Outlander will return for an eighth and final season of 10 episodes.
Fans will undoubtedly be sad to see Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) Fraser’s time-traveling adventures end. Still, Starz has given the go-ahead for the prequel series Blood Of My Blood, which will run for 10 episodes. Said Matthew B. Roberts, showrunner and executive producer:
“Outlander: Blood of My Blood is, at its heart, a love story,”
“It will explore what lengths a person will go to find love in a time when love is considered a luxury, and when marriages are made strategically, often for political or financial gain. The title is a nod to Jamie Fraser’s marriage vow to Claire and there will be several names and faces that Outlander fans will know and recognize. Jamie and Claire’s TV story may be coming to an end with season eight, but Diana is continuing on with their literary journey in her wonderful book series and is working diligently on book ten. With Jamie and Claire, and now Brian and Ellen, there is still so much more to come in the Outlander universe, and we cannot wait to continue sharing these stories with our dedicated fans.”

After the network announced it was in construction in August, rumors of the new project started circulating in the summer of 2021. The movie Blood of My Blood, based on Diana Gabaldon’s book, delves into the romance between Jamie’s parents, Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser.

Roberts will serve as showrunner and executive producer (EP) and be the showrunner and EP of the flagship series. Under their production company Tall Ship Productions, Maril Davis and Ronald D. Moore, who created Outlander for television, will also executive produce the prequel.
The franchise’s literary inspiration, Diana Gabaldon, will serve as a consulting producer for Story Mining & Supply Company. Executive producers on the Sony Pictures Television project Outlander include Roberts, Moore, Davis, Toni Graphia, Luke Schelhaas, Andy Harries, Jim Kohlberg, Balfe, and Heughan.
Outlander is made by Tall Ship Productions, Left Bank Pictures, and Story Mining & Supply Company in collaboration with Sony Pictures Television. Sony Pictures Television will develop Blood of My Blood. Karen Bailey, EVP of Original Programming for Starz, will supervise the prequel.
