Billy Porter Husband: The Journey of Porter and His Husband

William Ellis Porter II is an American actor, singer, writer, and director born September 21, 1969. After earning his degree in drama from Carnegie Mellon University, he rose to renown on Broadway before launching a solo acting and singing career.

Porter’s performance as Lola in Kinky Boots earned him the 2013 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. To face toxic masculinity, he attributes the role to “breaking open” his feminine side.

Porter also received the Drama Desk Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Actor in a Musical for the performance. Porter received the Grammy for Kinky Boots in 2014 for Best Musical Theater Album.

Billy Porter, the star of Pose and soon-to-be EGOT winner/reigning monarch of the red carpet, is probably someone you know. How much do you know about his husband, though?

Yes, you read it correctly. Billy is wed, and he and his husband, Adam Smith, married in January 2017. They met at a dinner party in Hell’s Kitchen when Billy made *sure* he was seated next to Adam, but their romance dates back even further (ya love to see it).

And just so you know, Adam isn’t just a pretty face (he’s appeared alongside his husband on countless red-carpet occasions).

He is also a very successful businessman and designer, and in the summer of 2022, he will launch a brand-new fascinating project (more on that later, promise). Let’s start with their love story as it is the cutest, shall we? He and Billy.

In February 2009, not long after Adam relocated to New York City from Los Angeles, he met Billy at a dinner gathering hosted by a mutual acquaintance. They clicked right away, but it wasn’t by chance. Adam told People during a 2017 interview,

“I sat next to Billy. I found out later that wasn’t by accident!” The two continued to date “casually” for just over a year before deciding to part ways, but fortunately, they stayed close.

and they decided to rekindle their romance in 2015.“It had been marinating within me, my love for him and figuring it out and coming to terms with it over the years,” Adam explained to People.

“So I knew it was on me if I ever wanted to change anything; I would have to be the first to approach the subject.” And after attending a performance of Hamilton on Billy’s 46th birthday, they reconnected over dinner.

Everything went quickly once the couple reconciled. Billy proposed to Adam during a double date with friends in London in December 2015, just a few months after their reconciliation, and less than two weeks later, Adam and Billy were married.

They intended to get married before former president Donald Trump was sworn into office, which is why the wedding was hastily planned.

Adam explained to People, “We were discussing, and Billy had told me that it’s important for us to get married while [Barack] Obama is still president and before January 20. So we sat down and figured out when to make it work before the 20th.”

Luckily, they pulled it off (and did a pretty fabulous job of it, too) with an intimate wedding on January 14. “I should create How to Plan a Fabulous Wedding in 10 Days because I had 10 days!”

Adam later joked with Playbill. “It was so much fun and it was a whirlwind. But it all turned out more beautifully than I could ever imagine.”

Was Billy Porter Previously Married?

The New York Times claims that before marrying Billy, Adam got married to someone else, but their union did not last. It’s unknown who Adam was married to or how long the marriage lasted since he never discussed it publicly.

Adam Didn’t Initially Intend To Go Into Business:

Adam initially wanted to follow in his husband’s footsteps and become a performer, even though he ultimately chose a different career route.

It’s unknown why he made the decision. Still, soon after receiving his degree, he began working as a sales representative for Marchon Eyewear, and his career in luxury eyeglasses quickly took off.

He Shared Ownership of a High-end Eyewear Company

Adam became a co-owner of Native Ken in 2011 after having previously worked for several high-end fashion companies, including Chanel, Jil Sander Eyewear, and Dita Eyewear. Although it appears that he’s since gone on to other ventures, Adam joined the team in 2016.

In October 2021, Adam posted a ~mysterious~ photo of a logo simply reading “The Smith Society” on IG and tagged Billy in the post, along with their friend Andrew Egan, a creative director and photographer. His caption for the post: “Coming Summer 2022. ” IDK what’s happening, but it seems prominent!!
