December 8 marks the release of “I, Tonya,” a motion picture based on the life of figure skater Tonya Harding and the occasions leading up to her 1994 assault on competitor Nancy Kerrigan.

It’s Hollywood’s interpretation of the skater’s career ascent in figure skating and subsequent fall from grace following her participation in the Kerrigan attack at the Cobo Arena in Detroit, which also involved her ex-husband Jeff Gillooly.

Kerrigan’s primary figure skating adversary was Harding, based in Portland, Oregon. After Kerrigan pulled out of the competition, she was able to take first place in the United States and earn a spot in the Olympics.

Harding vehemently denied that he was aware of any plot to harm Kerrigan.

Shawn Eckardt was the figure skater Tonya Harding’s bodyguard at the time of the attack on Nancy Kerrigan in 1994. Eckardt was also involved in the preparation of the assault.
