Taylor Townsend is a tennis player from America. She peaked at No. 61 in singles in July 2018 and No. 6 in doubles in May 2023.

She reached the US Open doubles finals in 2022 and the Miami Open doubles finals in 2023, both times with Caty McNally and Leylah Fernandez.

She was named the ITF Junior World Champion in 2012 after finishing the year as the top-ranked girl in junior tennis. This was significant because she was the first American to do it since 1982.

That same year, she won both the junior singles and doubles titles at the Australian Open, as well as three of the four junior Grand Slam doubles titles.

Taylor Townsend was born in Chicago on April 16, 1996. Her parents, Gary and Sheila, are both school principals, and her mother worked as a bank teller before having children.

Taylor’s mother, Sheila, also played tennis in college at Lincoln University in Missouri. Taylor’s older sister, Symone, was a Florida A&M University tennis player.

Taylor began playing tennis at the age of six and was one of the first junior players to join Kamau Murray’s XS Tennis program. Kamau Murray is well known for tutoring major championship winner Sloane Stephens.

Taylor relocated to Atlanta when she was eight years old to continue her tennis instruction with Donald Young Sr., the father of another renowned tennis player, Donald Young Jr. Taylor’s mother and Young Sr. are buddies because they used to play tennis together in Chicago.

Taylor joined the USTA development program at the age of 14 and relocated to Boca Raton, Florida. When the USTA refused to cover her fees for the 2012 US Open, Murray and XS Tennis arranged a fundraiser to generate funds, allowing her to compete in the tournament.

Taylor continued to practice with Kamau Murray in Chicago after receiving coaching from Zina Garrison in the D.C. region. Donald Young Sr. has been her coach since 2015. Taylor idolizes tennis legend Martina Navratilova and aspires to play like her.

Taylor revealed her pregnancy on social media on October 14, 2020, and gave birth to her son, Adyn Aubrey, on March 14, 2021.

Townsend’s first big tennis event was the US Open in 2014. It came after she lost at Wimbledon. She was ranked among the top 100 female tennis players in the world in 2015.

Her singles ranking dropped for a period, but she fought her way back to the top 100 in 2017. In the same year, she climbed to number 64 in the world rankings.

She played well in doubles at the 2016 US Open, reaching the semifinals. She had her greatest year in 2019, finishing in the top ten of the world rankings.

She advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2019 US Open by defeating Simona Halep, the world’s fourth-ranked player and two-time major champion. She even fought off match points against Halep to win.

Her round of 16 performance was her best at a major tournament thus far, although she was eventually upset by Bianca Andreescu, who went on to win the championship.

She has also won numerous ITF singles and doubles titles, and she and Yanina Wickmayer won the doubles title at Indian Wells in 2018.
