Taylor Townsend was born in Chicago on April 16, 1996. Her parents, Gary and Sheila, are both school principals, and her mother worked as a bank teller before having children.
Taylor’s mother, Sheila, also played tennis in college at Lincoln University in Missouri. Taylor’s older sister, Symone, was a Florida A&M University tennis player.
Taylor began playing tennis at the age of six and was one of the first junior players to join Kamau Murray’s XS Tennis program. Kamau Murray is well known for tutoring major championship winner Sloane Stephens.
Taylor relocated to Atlanta when she was eight years old to continue her tennis instruction with Donald Young Sr., the father of another renowned tennis player, Donald Young Jr. Taylor’s mother and Young Sr. are buddies because they used to play tennis together in Chicago.
Taylor joined the USTA development program at the age of 14 and relocated to Boca Raton, Florida. When the USTA refused to cover her fees for the 2012 US Open, Murray and XS Tennis arranged a fundraiser to generate funds, allowing her to compete in the tournament.
Taylor continued to practice with Kamau Murray in Chicago after receiving coaching from Zina Garrison in the D.C. region. Donald Young Sr. has been her coach since 2015. Taylor idolizes tennis legend Martina Navratilova and aspires to play like her.
