Deadpool 3 Release Date: When Can We Expect It in Theaters?

Information on Deadpool 3 was scarce, but then the floodgates opened. The threequel’s release date has been set, and more intriguing details are being prepared for Marvel fans to enjoy. Late in September 2022, Ryan Reynolds revealed that Hugh Jackman would reprise his role as Wolverine in the threequel.

Not only will it be Wolverine’s MCU debut, but it will also be Jackman’s comeback following what was ostensibly his final role in Logan. The threequel was once reported to have writers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin from Bob’s Burgers.

However, it now appears that the writers of the first and second films, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, are also writing the third film. Following The Adam Project and Free Guy, it will be Shawn Levy’s third collaboration with Reynolds as director.

Deadpool 3 Release Date

As already mentioned, Deadpool 3 will hit theaters on September 6, 2024. In MCU semantics, this either designates the third installment as the conclusion of Phase 5 or the start of Phase 6. The latter is more feasible because Marvel did establish a release date for an untitled movie or TV show in Phase 6 for the fall of 2024.

Even though we now know the film’s release date, we still don’t know when it will begin production. However, we may presume that it will start in 2023 to guarantee that September 2024 will be the film’s release date. However, there is always a chance of delays.

Who’s Going to Be in Deadpool 3?

Ryan Reynolds was always going to return as Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, and now that we know he has some serious company, it makes sense. Hugh Jackman will play Wolverine in his first MCU appearance, as was already established.

Although the specific canonical workings are still unknown, we anticipate some multiversal antics. Reynolds technically already appeared in an MCU advertisement alongside the character Korg from Thor: Ragnarok and in the Avengers Campus ride Avengers Assemble: Flight Force.

With the X-Force squad, introduced in Deadpool 2, we also met various new heroes. Although some didn’t live long enough, we might see characters like Cable (Josh Brolin) and Domino (Zazie Beetz) again. After some hemming and hawing, Beetz in August 2022 appeared to hint at a return:

“Well, I can’t, obviously, really say anything, but I feel lucky. I just can’t really divulge or say anything, so we’ll see, I suppose.”

Suppose we see the X-Force again, perhaps with Peter (Rob Delaney) along for the ride. In that case, Colossus (Stefan Kapii), Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand), Yukio (Shioli Kutsuna), and Russell (Julian Dennison) will likely complete the crew.

Although it’s unlikely that characters like Zeitgeist (Bill Skarsgrd) and Shatterstar (Lewis Tan) will appear in Deadpool 3, superheroes frequently outlive their mortal enemies in comic books, so it’s never a guarantee. Due to a tweet exchange between Reynolds and Leslie Uggams, who plays Blind Al’s roommate, we can reasonably assume Blind Al will make a comeback.

Vanessa, Deadpool’s girlfriend, is one character who has already escaped death in the franchise (if Deadpool 2’s post-credits sequence is canon), and it’s safe to assume that she’ll return for the sequel as well. However, Morena Baccarin hasn’t yet confirmed anything.

She previously defended Vanessa’s lack of screen time in the sequel with fans accusing the movie of ‘fridging’ her. She said:

“I can understand that people felt that way and I certainly was disappointed that I didn’t have more to do, because I just loved the part so much,”

“But in watching the film and reading the script, it felt like such an emotionally pivotal role in the film and the entire arc of his character in the film is set into motion because of what happens to my character.”

However, last Easter eggs have suggested that Mr. Sinister would end up being the main antagonist in Deadpool 3. Thus the Merc with a Mouth may find himself fighting to defend her in addition to his other duties. If not, Deadpool 2’s chopped cameo from characters like Omega Red in the scene set in the Ice Box Prison may offer another indication of the franchise’s direction.

We won’t be too concerned if TJ Miller, who portrayed Weasel in the first two films, decides not to return because he’d “rather they didn’t” produce a third film. Reynolds, a frequent social media user, also fueled speculation that Miss Minutes, Loki’s AI for the Time Variance Authority, may make a cameo.

What Will the Story of Deadpool 3 Be About?

Reynolds has teased that the threequel is teasingly adding:

looking to go in a completely different direction. “Often, they reboot or change a character maybe like four movies too late.”

Even though the threequel’s initial director claimed it didn’t require an R certificate to be fantastic, the film will be classified as R, so don’t worry about that. Deadpool has “established” itself as an R-rated franchise, Feige stated in February 2021.

Reese and Wernick assured that the threequel wouldn’t be “Disney-fied” after they joined the project. Assured Reese:

“They are gonna let Deadpool be Deadpool, you know? It’s not like any particular joke may be the one that they say: ‘You know, that’s too far’. That could happen, but to this point, it’s been nothing but support,”

It’s unknown how the MCU link of the film will affect the story’s continuity with the original two films or if it’ll essentially be a soft reboot. Does this imply that Deadpool 3 will emphasize time travel more?

When we last saw Negasonic Teenage Warhead, she was repairing Cable’s time machine so that Deadpool could make up for bad but hilarious professional decisions made by Ryan Reynolds in the past. According to a Reese plot tease, the third Deadpool movie will explicitly confront the fact that he is now in a different reality than before rather than retconning his MCU position. Noted Reese:

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for fish-out-of-water. Deadpool is a lunatic at the centre of a movie. To drop a lunatic into a very sane world, it’s straight butter. It’s going to be really fun,”

Reynolds tweeted in January 2021 that the third film would be a Rashomon-style road trip with Deadpool and Wolverine before the Disney-Fox merger. This was before Jackman’s involvement was confirmed.

In Rashomon, several characters relate to the tale of a samurai killed in a forest. Could the dead samurai in this scenario be Wolverine?

Feige has also set a pretty high bar for the movie, comparing it to fellow MCU threequels. He said:

“How do we elevate it in the way we’ve been able to with Civil War, and Infinity War and Ragnarok?”

Is There a Trailer For Deadpool 3?

Not yet, as the threequel won’t start shooting until the following year, in 2023. Ryan Reynolds did provide us with an update via his YouTube channel, which you can view here, as we previously said.
